Self-Tanning Cream Addictive According to Harvey Birdman
April 21, 2006 on 4:06 am by MortensonHarvey Birdman, Attorney at Law (part of Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”) devoted an entire episode to self-tanning cream. In it, Birdman, who is dependent on the sun for his powers, develops a melanoma, and decides to use self-tanning cream as a sunless alternative to the real thing. He becomes addicted to it as it fuels his powers and gives him a healthy glow.
After years of getting his powers from the sun, Harvey notices a suspicious spot on his skin. When his dermatoligist insists he stay out of the sun and use sunblock, the now droopy Birdman turns to a self-tanning cream for a pick me up. It isn’t long before he’s addicted to the stuff, using more and more to stay awake.
It was the 14th episode of the series, which you can check out on Amazon. Very funny, but completely crazy. For more on self-tanning creams check out our Tanning Moisturizer’s self-tanning lotion reviews. And note that self-tanning is not PHYSICALLY addictive as Birdman implies, but looking like you have a healthy glowing skin can be MENTALLY addictive.
Katie Couric Turns Tangerine from Sunless Tanning
April 20, 2006 on 3:50 am by MortensonThe Chicago Tribune has a brief playful review of Katie Couric and sunless tanning more generally. The focus is on the potential pitfalls that people encounter at all levels of sunless tanning as we have seen with our past articls on Lindsay Lohan’s Fake Bake self tanner overdose and the risk of getting orange hands while using sunless tanning lotions.
At least until the 1990s, when we began anointing ourselves with foams, sprays and creams that promised to make us look golden, only without the risk of an actual suntan. In bathrooms across the nation, we immediately noticed our hands turning a muddy orange. We also noticed our fake tan was strangely streaky-looking and uneven.
That’s when we learned there are rules for sunless tanning, a complex and tiresome ritual built around preparing the skin to accept the fact we’re about to douse it with chemicals.
And so a kind of natural selection occurred, and women sorted themselves into distinct groups: those who would never waste a moment on a sunless tan; a vast middle ground who occasionally slap a little self-tanner on pale legs before traipsing around in a sundress; and serious fake-tan devotees.
The key, as always, is matching your skin to the proper shade of self tanner lotion and experimenting with different self lotions brands from Jergens Natural Glow to Au Courant’s varied lines of sunless tanners until you find the lotion that looks the best on you.
Banana Boat Sunless Summer Color Comparison
April 12, 2006 on 3:35 am by MortensonThe WCF Courier has a round-up of the latest offerings in self-tanning lotions as summer approaches and people should be thinking about getting their glow on. Self-tanners offer fake, no-bake summer glow” provides mini-reviews for several self tanners which we have reviewed. For instance here is a side by side comparison of what they thought about Banana Boat’s Summer Color Sunless Spray vs our review of Banana Boat Sunless Summer Color Self Tanning Foam:
Ease of application: Very easy.Scent: They aren’t kidding about directions to use in well-ventilated area. It reminded me of the Aqua Net days of the ’80s. Once the fumes settled, I never noticed it again.
Color: I didn’t spray my feet at all, but the overspray turned my feet orange and was enough to make it look like I was a regular on the sand volleyball court and not interested in scrubbing my feet. The rest of my legs looked OK though. Not that many streaks. What little streaking did occur after one coat was evened out with two extra sprays the next day.
Overall: After three sprays, I wasn’t very bronze, but I attribute it to my pale skin tone. It definitely added color and was worth the three minutes of trouble.
Compared to:
Strengths: Good value at a low price. Doesn’t get too dark too quickly so it’s good for beginners who want to experiment and get a gradual effect.
Weaknesses: Conversely, don’t expect quick results with this product — it may require several applications so if you’re looking for a quick fix this is not the product for you. Also, the smell may come on a little strong for some of our readers who prefer a more subtle fragrance! This product seems to work best for light skin.

Self-Tanning is the Perfect Complement for Any Sundress
April 6, 2006 on 3:06 am by MortensonWhat is the perfect accessory for your cute, fun sundress this summer? A sunless tan of course. Everyone loves the warmth of the summer, the brightness of the sun and the healthy feeling of no longer being couped up inside watching the snow. But during the transition from cold to warm, it’s difficult to have to keep from your pale skin from ruining your summer look. The obvious solution is to save yourself the time and health risks of going to a salon and just do-it-yourself at home.
A great place to start is with the popular self-tanning lotion, Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, which you can find in different shades so you can match your self tanning to your skin tone. You can find it in any retailer as well as online. Another option, for those looking for a more sophisticated product is to try any one of a number of boutique self-tanning lotions, sprays, creams and gels from such labels as California North or Au Courant. These products will all help give you the darkened tone that makes a dress or short-sleaved shirt look hot.
As summer approaches a wave of articles have begun to appear focusing on what you should do to get ready for the onset of sun and fun. MSN had a series on the different new self-tanning lotions that hinted at what we will spell out for you. It’s clear that it’s the perfect time to get your sunless tan on.
Lewie’s Tanning Moisturizer FAQ
April 2, 2006 on 12:03 am by MortensonEvem though he uses the word “moisturization” (which didn’t make it into my dictionary), Lewie has put together a decent self tanning lotion-ization FAQ.
- He goes through the rationale for using tanning moisturizer in the first place, although since he also sells lotion for use in tanning salons he also justifys those. Bad call Lewie: cancer comes from UV rays and doesn’t discriminate between their source.
- The meat of the page discussed the when, why and how of tanning products
- There’s also a good explanation of the different ingredients that find their way into sunless tanning products
