What Makes Self Tanners Work?

Have you ever wondered what the active ingredient is that is in self tanning lotions? Your sun-kissed glow comes from DHA or dihydroxyacetone, which is a colorless chemical. DHA was approved by the FDA as an approved ingredient in cosmetics for external use back in 1973. Early use of DHA in self tanning lotions produced an orange coloring which did not result in a natural looking tan. Extended research over the years have brought us new products that produce a natural and sun-kissed tanned skin tone. Now that you know what is responsible for your new golden glow, how does it work to produce this awesome glow?

DHA works by reacting with the amino acid in the top layer of your skin. As they combine, the melaninoids then darken which results in a darker pigmentation of your skin tone. Your new sunless tan is visible and alive–but only in the top layer of skin. Since this only affects the top layer of skin or surface skin, you will need to re-apply your self tanner daily to keep your new color looking its best.
