Clarins Self Tanning Milk: I Put It To The Test!

January 31, 2007 on 12:30 pm by Mortenson

clarinsmilk.jpgClarins Self Tanning Milk is made in France and thought of as one of your better sunless tanning products. I decided to put this one to the test and found some interesting results.

Let’s start out with the claims that Clarins makes about this product. Clarins claims that color appears in 1 to 2 hours and will give you a natural looking tan. The formula is described as lightweight and milky. Unlike most sunless self tanning products, this one does contain a sun protection factor of 6.

My Personal Thoughts On Clarins Self Tanning Milk

One of the things I always notice first about a product is the scent. When you remove the cap on Clarins Self Tanning Milk, you can’t help but notice the scent. It is rather strong and some may find it a bit offensive or “too much”. Once applied to your skin, the scent is not as strong but you will find a lingering scent for several hours.

Clarins to me wasn’t really a lightweight formula. I found the cream to be of a medium consistancy at least. It is rich, thick and creamy or “milky” if you want to use Clarins’ definition. The color is a medium to dark brown so this is one that you will definitely want to wash off your hands immediately or use a tanning mitt for application.

Applying the self tanning milk was easy. It did not streak or leave any unusual spots. As long as you apply it quickly, evenly and with a good circular motions you should also achieve a streak-free application.

Probably the most important factor to a sunless tanning product is the end results, right? While I found that this product did a descent job of creating a natural sunless tan, I still had a few reservations about it. Why? I didn’t care for the scent of this product and I could have overlooked that if it had been the only strike for this product. Combined with the fact that this didn’t do much in the form of moisturizing, I hold a grudge. To me, this product works no better than some drugstore brands. Clarins Self Tanning Milk retails for $29.50 for a 4.2 fl. oz. tube. I can get the same results by spending under $10.00 on Dove Energy Glow Daily Moisturizer and have a product that smells better and moisturizes my skin.

Application Tips

Clarins recommends applying this product one day after exfoliating skin. For best results apply in large sweeping motions, do not re-apply to any area, and let product dry before dressing. Wash hands immediately after application.

March 27, 2006 on 5:55 pm by Mortenson

Have you seen The Style Group’s Top 10 List of self tanners? In it, it boasts its “Top 10 Picks” for a natural glow. As you can guess, many of them are high-end, with Clarins taking the top two spots (Clarins Sheer Bronze and Clarins Self-Tanning Instant Spray take the #1 and #2 spots, respectively). Additionally, the reviews read like a page out of The Devil Wears Prada:

…grab a bottle of Clarins Sheer Bronze for Legs & Face Self Tanner, The Style Group’s number 1 pick for the Top 10 Self-Tanners List. I swear, this is a life-saver that instantly bestows a wonderful natural gold shimmer to your legs and face, perfect against the white Chloe dress that Barneys sent over.

Also receiving shout-outs on the list were Estee Lauder, St. Tropez, Sisley, and others. You can check out our coverage of Clarins and these other brands by clicking the links to the right! Check it out!

Who Wants Orange Palms Like an Oompa-Loompa?

Dark hands are a telling sign that your tan came straight from a bottle. The reason for this problem is quite simple: Self-tanner will produce color anywhere that it is applied and left. An easy rule to remember. The trick is applying without getting it all over your hands. Hmmm…tough one. AuerSaver Tanning & Fitness has some helpful hints:

Wash your hands several times while applying tanner (don’t forget to soap between your fingers and around your nails), Tsao says. Or try an easy-to-use spray-on product, such as Clarins Self Tanning Instant Spray or One Touch Instant Self Tanning Spray, which requires only minimal handling.

Also, you can disposable latex gloves can protect your hands. Or you can use a foam applicator, such as the Au Courant Sponge On a Stick Body Applicators. Either way, after applying the self-tanner to your whole body, remove the gloves and put a tiny spot of self-tanner on the backs of your hands and rub them together to blend it in. It’s important that the shade on your hands matches the rest of your body.
